Written in the weeks following September 11, 2001 Marcia, a volunteer firefighter/EMT, continued grieving our nation's loss through terrorism.
Her poem captures the horror, the tragedy, and the deadly outcome of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 but also portrays our powerful resolve to find the lost, protect our nation, and win the ultimate victory over terror both near and far.
At a time when our country mourned the loss of loved ones in and out of the line of duty, millions began grieving the loss of life and freedom. But we also began to see a new American Spirit; strong, brave, resilient. Our deep loss mixed with hope, questions and personal growth as we began celebrating the courage of America to stand strong under pressure and under one God.
Ten years later, our cheeks still provide the backdrop for salty tears – hardly dry. Our broken hearts still break with daily news of loss in the wake. Though our spirits shine with courage to face the danger of the enemy of this great controversy, we are reminded that the battle at Ground Zero is fought in each heart every day.
September 11, 2001 sparked a turning point ember for thousands who recognized that the battle between good and evil was also very personal.
The war for our very souls is a passionately, intense war. One that can end abruptly as it did on September 11 for so many. This poem reminds us that amidst the loss and war that we can see, the battle for our Eternal Destiny is often unseen, unnoticed.
