Part of our value-added professional format series, the Combined Arms for Air Defense Field Manual (FM 44-8) covers air defense artillery units. This FM has been converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction.

Air defense artillery units are a limited resource on the battlefield. Available ADA resources will be dedicated to the protection of assets deemed by commanders to be critical to the success of the tactical plan, leaving other assets without dedicated ADA coverage. All units with or without dedicated ADA support must contribute to their own defense against air attack. This manual is addressed to all unit commanders. It explains the air threat to units on the ground and places the threat in its proper perspective. It also explains how ground commanders can protect their units from air attack through the use of passive and active air defense measures. Force-projection operations doctrine reflects the shift towards stronger joint operations. Army operations have evolved into a variety of choices for a battlefield framework and a wider interservice arena, allowing for the increasing incidence of combined operations. Army participation in air defense is no longer the sole responsibility of army air defense assets. Members of the combined arms team can use their organic firepower along with air defense assets to provide self-defense, suppress enemy air defenses, and provide maneuver force protection. Army units can use their organic firepower to destroy attacking aircraft and drive others away. Field Artillery, Infantry, Armor, and Aviation contribute to the air defense fight by engaging enemy aircraft in self-defense and by making attacks on enemy airfields and logistics assets that support their aviation units. ARMY PARTICIPATION IN AIR DEFENSE, ARMY ELEMENTS AIR DEFENSE CONTRIBUTIONS, AIR DEFENSE ARTILLERY: Maneuver force protection, THAAD System High-value asset protection, Patriot System Counter-RISTA, SHORAD Systems, Avenger, MANPAD System, BSFV Linebacker, FIELD ARTILLERY: Attack critical air assets, Missiles FARPs, Cannons Transporter-erector-launchers, Rockets SEAD, ARMY AVIATION: Self-defense/AD on order, Helicopters Maneuver force protection, SEAD, CHEMICAL: Concealment, Smoke Units Deception/denial, OTHER COMBINED ARMS: Self-defense, Organic Weapons Attack critical air assets, SEAD, SPECIAL OPERATIONS FORCES: Provide surveillance, intelligence, and targeting, Skilled Soldiers Attack critical air assets. Contents include: Chapter 1 EVALUATE THE BATTLEFIELD, The Battlefield Environment, The Battlefield Effects, Threat Evaluation, The Aerial Threat, Threat Application, Threat Courses of Action, Chapter 2 TECHNIQUES FOR SELF-DEFENSE WARNINGS, Air Defense Early Warning Nets, Local Air Defense Warnings, Rules of Engagement, Directed Early Warning, Sample Early Warning Scenario, Unit Warning, Chapter 3 AERIAL SEARCH, Air Guard Responsibilities, Aerial Search in a Convoy, Search Techniques, Systematic Methods of Search, Visual Aerial Platform Recognition, Chapter 4 PASSIVE AIR DEFENSE MEASURES, Types of Passive Air Defense Measures, Passive Air Defense Measures in Convoy, Convoy Self-Defense Measures, Chapter 5 ACTIVE AIR DEFENSE MEASURES, Active Air Defense, Small Arms Used for Air Defense.

As a bonus, this reproduction includes FM-1, The Army Field Manual, a capstone manual containing the vision for the Army - sold separately for $5.99. FM 1 establishes the fundamental principles for employing Landpower. The most important of these are the Army's operational concept and the fundamentals that support it. They form the foundation for all Army doctrine. All Soldiers should understand and internalize them. FM 1 describes the American profession of arms, the Army's place in it, and what it means to be a professional Soldier.
