Patrick, a young lecturer at a prominent university in Cape Town, can’t resist the attention his bright and beautiful student, Julie, gives him and soon their relationship escalates into a passionate affair. From the start Patrick makes it clear that he has no intention of leaving his wife and two small children, and although he is shocked when Julie announces she is pregnant, he doesn’t realise the full impact the situation will have on his life.
Not willing to settle for second-best, Julie takes revenge and her father, a wealthy and connected man, supports her in her endeavors.
Eventually Patrick loses everything that is dear to him, including his soul, and he ends up on the street. Over time he is forced to make serious decisions about his life and he has to face up to his demons of alcohol and drug abuse. Although his big test comes years later when he is faced with meeting his children, for Patrick it is more than that, he has to seek forgiveness from the one woman he has hurt terribly.
The story takes place over a period of twenty years in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, South Africa and the reader travels the road with the characters as they struggle to deal with the cards that life has dealt them.
