The book is set in the time period just before the First World War. The story revolves around the tragedy of Edward Ashburnham. The story chronicles the events which occur in the life of that soldier. It describes the seemingly perfect marriage of the soldier and the marriages of two of his American friends.

A series of flashbacks tell the story in a non-chronological order. It was a literary technique which Ford developed in pioneering his view of literary impressionism.

The author has employed the device of the unreliable narrator very effectively as the central character slowly discloses a version of events which happen to be quite different from what the introduction leads the reader to believe.
