Bartender Jack Hannon's August 1949 murder in Rockaway Beach was a violent event that remained unsolved at the end of the year. Law enforcement believed that Hannon's assassin used a German luger P-38. Multiple witnesses looked on as the barkeep was shot three times in the head. Hannon died in the street near 100-25 St. Marks Avenue. The killer quickly jumped back into a '49 Kaiser which eluded a bus driver who attempted to pursue it in traffic. According to most people who knew him the victim was a fine person. He was always willing to loan money to people who needed it. Near the end of his life many acquaintances noticed that Hannon had become especially apprehensive when cars passed by on the street.
