Seventeen-year-old AJ, the Gypsy kid, trudges along a narrow tree-shaded road. Adeline Goodwin, a beautiful fifteen-year-old girl, thunders by on her spirited horse and turns into her family’s thoroughbred farm.

AJ works for Adeline’s father, tending to their many horses, shoveling out the stalls, and filling the feed bags. He lives with his hard-drinking, abusive, petty thief father in a squatter’s shack.

He is in love with Adeline. What fellow could resist the pretty, vivacious girl? A stableboy could never travel in her circle, and he knows it. Twenty-year-old Grady from the bordering farm has plans for her. In time they will marry and merge the two properties into one. He will have the most prestigious breeding farm in all of Tennessee.

Grady starts a rumor that AJ is a night stalker who has plans to attack Adeline in her sleep, best to get the handsome stableboy out of the picture. Adeline, frightened by the rumor, drives AJ off. The boy’s spirit is shattered.

Finding his father once again in jail, the anguished AJ burns down their squatter’s shack, hops a freight train, and heads for parts unknown. In a hobo camp, he meets Buck, a land surveyor with a plan. They head to the Oklahoma oil fields. It’s 1938, and things are booming!

Over the next few years, they make themselves wealthy men. Things in Tennessee take a disastrous turn for the Goodwin family! A tornado destroys their farm and kills Adeline’s father.

Years pass, and AJ comes back to Tennessee to find the Goodwin property for sale. He outbids Grady and rebuilds the farm to its former greatness. Adeline has been in Paris with a broken heart. Coming home, she is overwhelmed to see what he has done to the farm. Love blossoms between them. AJ’s dream has been fulfilled, but Grady is yet to be dealt with. He will stop at nothing to get the farm.
