All Loves Excelling seeks to convince the reader for the need to preach sanctification and holiness. It distinguishes between these by defining sanctification as the process by which God makes one holy and holiness as the quality of life which follows. According to Knight, holiness is the very heart of the Christian faith because the gospel is the person of Christ whom holiness works to emulate. The second section of the book has been previously published under the title In His Likeness: Gods Plan for a Holy People. It begins by explaining the nature of Gods holiness and what this means for his relationship with mankind. Then, Knight explores the sinful nature of man as well as how God reaches out to man through covenantal promises. A definition of sin is sought; discussion begins with a legal view and ends up with a discussion of Wesleys idea of perfect love as explained in an ethical view of sin. This section is followed with a general discussion of atonement and the possibilities of life that it creates. The last two chapters of this section work to answer common questions and misunderstandings of holiness and then describes the journey of a life lived towards holiness. The final portion of the book is a transcription of a sermon published to help demonstrate sanctification and holiness preaching.
