The book also deals with the economic problems in Nigeria due to corruption and the lack of will of the government and the wealthy people to bring about change. Ifemelu is a Nigerian girl who gets tired of the constant strikes in her university and goes abroad to complete her education. Her experiences in both Nigeria and the United States form the basis of the book.
