A great country and a great road trip. Great parks and great mountains.

This is the true story about the first in a series of road trips across America by Joseph Whelan, the author. Over the decades his travel time exceeded a year and the distance driven surpassed one hundred thousand miles. On this first trip of nineteen days, the journey was over eight thousand miles long and it and took him through twenty-three states. This is Ameritrekking.

Along the way he hiked to his first highpoints. A highpoint is the highest natural geographic point in any particular state. Every highpoint is different: some are relatively easy to get to, some are not so easy, some are hard, and some are high mountains. This is highpointing.

There are dozens of color pictures.

Most of the trip was spent in these states:
Arizona
Idaho
Montana
South Dakota
Texas
Wyoming

In addition to highpoints, the author visited several parks and areas of interest:
Craters of the Moon National Monument
Crazy Horse Memorial
Custer State Park
Devils Tower National Monument
Glacier National Park
Grand Canyon National Park
Guadalupe Mountains National Park
Hells Canyon
Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument
Meteor Crater (Barringer)
Mount Rushmore National Memorial
Nez Perce National Historical Park (White Bird Battlefield)
Saguaro National Park
Salmon River (The River of No Return)
Tombstone (O.K. Corral)
Wounded Knee
