A short preface provides a few reasons for the work. Chapter 1 provides over 160 aphorisms that generally favors the soldier as a model for wisdom over the priest. Topics include battle tactics for war and applied to life in general. Sex, marriage, family, causes of vice and virtue, education and diet come under consideration. One should not assume that the author necessarily lives up to his adages assiduously. Impulse takes its toll, strengthened by bad habit and provocation from an evil world, coupled with forgetfulness of lessons learned. And he suffers the consequences of these. Folly does not promote success. But then I am not running for Sage General of the United States or any other locality at the moment. Chapter 2 has a few paragraphs enlarging on some of the basic tenets in the first chapter.
