Art-lovers is set in 1982 and is the story of a young man called Henry Bowers. Henry wants to change society and culture with his art. He feels that the new vibrant culture is being slowly manipulated by industry, and in a few years time it will be all but gone in shape and form. The young artist wants to save it from being destroyed.
When he makes up his mind to become an artist everything from that moment is done exactly right. However no one seems interested in him, and he is outlawed from all the grant systems via the government agencies in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Henry feels that the Arts Council in his native land promote highbrow culture for the elite in society. The young man, even though no help is forthcoming, will not give up his individual character; for he believes that his art will one day change the world. He tries to put on an exhibition titled: Fashion Squares, but the dealers will not show his work. After this he becomes and art anarchist and openly challenges the ruling powers, by spray painting his thoughts on walls all over the city. The paintings from the novel are featured on this web site.
