“Where will I go if I can't go back to the hospital?”
“I thought you might want to stay here with me for a while.”
“You want me to live with you?”
Garret reaches over the table to take her hand.
“Ryanne, you mean so much to me. I know it's only been a short while, but I'm facing the prospect of having to discharge you into someone else's care if we can't learn more about your identity, and I don't want to lose you from my life. It would be a no pressure situation. The choice is entirely yours, and I understand if you're not ready to move in here.”
She smiles and squeezes his hand. “Well, I suppose all my stuff is already here.”
The sound of a phone buzzing interrupts them, and he turns to look at the source.
“That must be the hospital. I'm not supposed to be working today, but sometimes I get calls. I'm sorry, but I have to check this quickly.”
He rises from the table and goes to pick up his phone from a small table near the front door. She can only hear his side of the conversation, but even that little bit is enough to send a chill down her spine.
“Dr. Hamilton here... Yes, she's here with me... I do... Of course... I understand... We'll be there shortly.”
He punches the End Call button and slips the phone into his pocket.
“Change of plans,” he says, his words fall out of his mouth like he's just swallowed ashes. “We have to go back to the hospital.”
“What's wrong, Garret?” She's afraid now, the coffee turning sour in her stomach and making her feel like she might throw up. “Is it my MRI? Did they find something bad?”
“No, it's not that,” he said as he looked at her with a careful expression on his handsome face. “It's your fiancé, Adam. He came to the hospital looking for you this morning.”
