Knowing Pandora in Sound: Acoustemology and Ecomusicological Imagination in Cameron's Avatar
Michael B. MacDonald
Musicologist Michael MacDonald examines indigenous music as a way of knowing through sound (acoustemology). He argues that had the film's composers been more directly engaged in relationship and solidarity with indigenous peoples, they could have made a more imaginative, evocative, and moving soundscape for the film while avoiding the ethical problem that often accompanies the colonial attitudes toward indigenous traditions – including sounds – as resources.
