In the early summer of 2004, it's rainy and cold in the Heartland, and Americans are trying to figure out what to make of the volatile political climate. In the midst of the drizzle, an Ivy-League-educated journalist begins a project that he hopes will reinvigorate his flagging career. He endeavors to paddle a tiny boat more than 200 miles down the length of an unexceptional river near his adopted Midwestern home, with the intent of getting his journalistic fingers on the pulse of America as he meets typical Midwesterners along the way. Unfortunately, his shameful lack of preparation for the trip catches up with him quickly, threatening to derail the entire project, and the "typical" Americans that he meets turn out to be a cast of misfits that includes drug dealers, monster hunters and political extremists.

A comedy of errors from one end of the river to the other, Backpaddling is a sly cautionary tale about the dangers of making assumptions about the people and places you think you know.
