My name is Skye Stone. I’m seventeen and from Los Angeles, California. At least, that’s what the strange voice in my mind tells me. But I can’t be certain. I don’t know who I am or where I am. Or what’s happening in the outside world. All I know is the caretaker in the medical mask calls me subject four. She tells me I’m special, and that I’m the key. To what? I’m not sure.

But I’m determined to find out. I know if I can remember my life outside this prison, I’ll understand why I’m here. I’ll understand my deep attraction to the boy in the cell next door, who is a telepath like me. Maybe I’ll figure out why I can’t die or why I can read minds. Or who’s behind my imprisonment.

The woman in the medical mask isn’t the only monster. She comes from a family of people gifted with psychic abilities. And as it turns out, I’m not so different from her. I’m here for a reason. I’m here because I’m a monster, too. And now I’m ready to take back what—and who—they’ve stolen from me. Unfortunately, the more I remember, the harder they try to break me. But I can’t be broken. They can’t take what I don’t have. I’ll beat their mind games if it’s the last thing I do. Because yesterday, I died by their hands. But today, I’m more alive than ever.
