Wells effectively employs disturbing elements to explore both the implications of evolutionary theory and to satirize modern society's religious institutions and its pride in its "civilization"...

      War and the Future, subtitled “Italy, France, and Britain at War,” was published in 1917. It contains first-hand observations and reflections on the long term impact and meaning of World War I.  Wells examines the effects of warfare, especially of tank and aerial bombing, and discusses weapons control and the creation of a world state.

In Wells’s thinly veiled autobiographical novel (1922), English gentleman Sir Richard Hardy tries to sort out his marital problems—by touring the countryside with Dr. Martineau, his psychiatrist. The story has also been called a love letter to birth-control activist Margaret Sanger, with whom Wells had a passionate affair.

Wells’s first book of short stories, published in 1895, collects fifteen prophetic forays into fantasy and science fiction: “The Flowering of the Strange Orchid,” “In the Avu Observatory,” “The Triumphs of a Taxidermist,” “A Deal in Ostriches,” “Through a Window,” “The Temptation of Harringay,” “The Flying Man,” and others.

Wells moves close to home in this 1905 Dickensian social satire. Kipps is a lowly draper until he inherits a fortune. But money doesn’t buy mobility, for Kipps has yet to learn the rules of upper-class behavior. One of Wells’s best novels, it was the basis for the hit musical Half a Sixpence.
