Willis John Abbot was an American journalist, and a prolific author of war, army, navy, marine corps and merchant marine books. 

These two pieces, published in 1868, shortly after the execution of Maximilian are good examples of the attitudes of Americans during the period shortly after the American Civil War. The French Expedition to Mexico gives a brief account of the events leading to the crowning of Maximilian, and Maximilian gives a brief biography of the emperor and his short reign.
