In this 1861 volume, Mill applies the principles of utilitarianism to politics and concludes that a representative government is the best system possible, though he is not shy about pointing out its flaws and shortcomings. He discusses extending suffrage and reforming voting, among other topics. His proposed solutions make this book almost as appropriate today as when it was written.

The book presents the concept of representative government, the ideal form of government. Mill suggests that representative bodies such as parliaments and senates are best suited to be places of public debate on the various opinions held by the population and to act as watchdogs of the professionals who create and administer laws and policy.

This 1884 treatise on political economy contains essays written in 1829 and 1830, some previously published, others presented here for the first time.  Mill’s first stab at economics, he later develops his theory in Political Economy, touching on everything from free market capitalism to socialism.

Posthumously published in 1874, these essays—“Nature,” “Utility of Religion,” and “Theism”—are highly critical of traditional religion, rejecting the belief in an omnipotent, benevolent God. Often undervalued, these essays are some of Mill’s most brilliant works.
