Poultry require the presence of at least 36 nutrients in their diet in appropriate concentrations and balance. Commonly available feed stuffs are usually deficient in many nutrients, and diets must be supplemented with the deficient nutrients, usually from purified sources. Errors in the formulation or milling may sometimes result in deficient or toxic levels of one or more nutrients.
