I recall that first lost tooth like yesterday / Its happy home in my mouth outgrown / It seemed torn between whether to stay / Or plunge out into that great unknown

I stared at the clouds from many an angle / And tried every which way its orientation / Yet all my honest effort failed to wrangle / From the page his heavenly manifestation

This overcast, moody September night / I watched in clouds explosions of light / A difference of air up there couldn’t agree / And I thought how very like you and me

Easier by far to smile and agree / To fabricate and nod / Than declare oneself sovereign and free / From a manufactured god / But it’s stood the test of man and time / The pinnacle of reason, rhyme / The greater height - the harder climb

A very young and curious child / I once went and asked my mom / Experience still tender and mild / Where newborn babies come from / The stork, she said and gently smiled

In a warm night’s sky when but a child / When thoughts and hours away I whiled / I saw a thing hung there on high / That flashed within my widened eye / Four stars against the sky arrayed / My mind transfixed by what they made

My friends, today’s a banner day! / Fit to hang my flags and let them fly / Beneath a sky of blue bereft of gray / In free air and sun to wave and dry
