Seit 2003 lebt er emeritiert in Kyoto. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in der Ästhetik, Literaturtheorie und -didaktik, Gattungspoetik, Psychologie und Kunstpsychologie. In diesen Gebieten veröffentlichte Ruttkowski zahlreiche Bücher und Essays.
