Horatio Alger Jr.(1832 – 1899), wrote over 100 poems, short stories, and novels during his lifetime, including four adult novels and one adult novella. He gained notoriety when his friendship with ‘William Taylor Adams’, a boys’ author, changed Alger’s interest to writing for the juvenile market.

Charlie Codman’s Cruise is one of Horatio Alger’s earlier ‘formula’ written books for boys. As with all of the author’s juvenile tales, it is a ‘rags to riches’, delightful, yet simple story, following Charlie Codman’s abduction from his impoverished mother, through his travels and travails aboard ship, and back to his loving home. Charlie’s adventure introduces him to new friends, and enemies, while his experiences enable him to aid in lifting his mother from the depths of poverty.
