In the Commentary on the Epistles Of John, Biblical scholars for the most part agree that the Apostle John spent his remaining earthly days overseeing the established church from Ephesus, until his death. The three epistles of John were likely written from Ephesus between A.D. 80 and 85. This would make them among the last New Testament books to be written. In the Apostle’s first epistle, John’s overall theme is a recall to the fundamentals of faith or for believers to return to the basics of Christianity; a call from the heart of a pastor. And although he follows the same theme in the second epistle, he adds three ingredients: truth, love, and obedience. The theme of his third epistle is the proper standard of Christian ‘hospitality.’ The Apostle offers not only Christian hospitality, but condemnation for failure to follow the standards established by apostolic authority.
