Dixie Ghost is the story of two teens, Gordon and Emily, who are in love. As high school seniors they graduate and then shortly later they get married.
They live in an an upstairs apartment. Gordon becomes a delivery driver for his father's auto parts factory. Emily attends college and studies to become a nurse.
They have 7 years of a very happy and fulfilling marriage. Gordon becomes a long distance truck driver and the two young people continue to grow in love.
That is until, they have a serious misunderstanding and Gordon leaves Emily and begins to live in his truck.
As he drives the highways he devises a plan to become a serial killer and target young women who have features similar to Emily's: Blond, petite and blue-eyed.
He trolls the bars throughout the South looking for victims. when he finds one he pretends to be interested in them and eventually goes with them to their apartment or house for what the young woman believes is a one night stand. Instead he poisons them and calls 911 identifying himself as the Dixie Ghost.
During his travels he encounters a private investigator named Scofield who periodically urges Gordon to call Emily to reconcile with her.
He also encounters his mother-in-law, father and best friend Carter Hurley.
Gordon thinks he has killed young women until one day he meets his first victim in a truckstop. Gordon is then arrested and taken to jail.
Emily visits him in jail. After the visit Godon collapses and wakes up to find himself in bed with Emily. It was a bad dream.
