The kid is delivered to Uncle Henry after he gets badly beat up elsewhere, by a school bully. The powers that be want hie out of their charge and into the charge of someone else, almost anyone else. Uncle Henry is really the only one that they can fob him off on.
I arrive at Uncle Henry's farm in a boat. Uncle Henry isn't too thrilled to see me. He apparently gets paid a pittance to house and feed me, but I don't detect any real joy at the prospect. In fact, there's a real undercurrent of, 'Why me?' from the man.
The kid is then given a tour of, “... your area of the farm.” His area of the farm includes some chickens that he's to feed and de-egg each day. He's also to provide fresh hay and feed for a couple of milk cows. There are a few cats that he's also to feed. There are a few other tasks for him.
In addition to his farm tasks, Uncle Henry tells him that he's to work out each morning, after his chores. After working each morning, he'll do his school work via a computer terminal.
The farm chores are torture at first, because of the workout pain. The only relief he gets from the pain is when he concentrates very hard on his computer-assisted schoolwork. Because of the pain relief and the total immunity he has from the teachers who had previously wanted to run his personal life, he begins to cover ground rather quickly.
As the weeks pass, he progresses rapidly with his physical development.
He's not allowed into any area of the farm, except the house, the kitchen garden, the barn and a few of the closer beastie pens. At night, he's always to remain in the house.
Sometimes he hears a mysterious humming noise from somewhere outside the house.
One night, the mysterious humming noise is explained. Uncle Henry comes back into the house from a nocturnal trip. His denim jacket is badly burned in the area of his left shoulder/chest. He has a pistol in his right hand. He's just about unconscious from pain. The kid grabs him as he reels in the door. The kid manages to lay Uncle Henry on the floor, or at least greatly break his fall. The kid has gotten a lot stronger, what with his workouts, but Uncle Henry is a big, heavy man.
Then the kid is forced to deal with alien dope dealers.
The kid manages to convince the alien dope dealers not to kill him and also to play a plan whereby the alien dope dealers outwit their rivals.
With no choice at all in the matter, the kid gambles with his life. Fortunately, the aliens are adults and it has been some time since they were trained to think.
