The achievements of Dundee United in the early 1980s are astonishing. During that period manager Jim McLean believed that to compete with Rangers and Celtic was a bit like a corner shop successfully taking on Tesco. But in season 1982-83 the men from Tannadice did just that and won. United hadnt won a thing until their League Cup triumph of 1979. Just four years later came the crowning glory as the Tangerines annexed the league title in May 1983. The class of 83 saw the best squad of players ever to sport Uniteds colours. Unlike so many clubs today, Dundee United didnt buy their way to success they didnt, and never will, have that kind of money. Instead, McLean was given enough time to fashion a championship winning squad. All but two of the thirteen core players who brought the title to Tannadice started their careers at the club. This, therefore, is a David and Goliath story, detailing one of the finest periods of Scottish football when the Old Firm had no choice but to bow before Dundee United Champions of Scotland.
