‘If someone asked you what you wanted to be, forever, what would you have said?’

‘Forever?’ Gary took a moment to think about it. ‘I think I’d have said Gary.’ He held his arms out in front of him, studying his hands. ‘Well, there we go,’ he added. ‘I’m the best Gary now. There aren’t any other Garys. I win the Gary contest!’

‘Be the best you could ever be,’ Ibro mused. ‘A lot of people on Earth would have asked for that.’

Gary glanced out of the window, towards the shadow of Earth, the cobwebs of light suspended within it. One strong gust of wind, he thought, would blow the Earth clean. It wouldn’t be long now.

‘Yup,’ Gary said. ‘I win.’
