American Civil War panoramas (and related large paintings of these battles) returned to older, but still popular, European visual traditions to memorialize the War. Prior to the invention of photographic film fast enough to capture a battle, panoramas were the most popular visual exploration of the Civil War. This made it a natural medium of visual expression as the country reexamined the War and changed their views, perceptions and expressions of their experiences of it.
This version of this book does not include the illustrations.
