The road trip from Chicago’s North Shore to California’s Pacific Coast is full of wide-open spaces, towering snow-capped mountains, dazzling rock formations, and crystal-clear lakes. It would have been a dream trip for Elissa Bennett Pope, a former Lake Forest debutante, residential property manager, real estate broker, summer stock theatrical performer, and one-time trophy wife. Except for one problem.

Elissa had thrown away her fortune when she couldn’t stand the abusive marriage that came with it. Now her traveling companion on that road trip is a dangerously attractive California archiect named F. Graham Harper.
