Escape Beyond Granpa's Fence

Forced to grow up during the tough times in Alabama, I eventually understood that life in my Granpa's old cotton field offered hardships for a reason, even if many were unforgiving more often than not. This was Granpa's and Granma's classroom preparing me for the unmerciful challenges that that lay ahead. Even as I cursed and swore I never wanted to live in my perceived poverty and shame. I found no escape from the ignominy as I grew older living here. Yet, Granma and Granpa refused to let me leave. Granma said more than once, 'I am determined to see you through this struggle or I'll bury you trying.' I truly failed to understand her most famous words while experiencing my trials until only recently. 'I'll help you get there; after that, I'll sit down.' They understood my desire and need to escape from this old cotton field prison even as they had no choice but to remain. Desiring to help me find a way out, they groomed me like breaking a young energetic stallion for my 'Escape Beyond Granpa's Fence.' I found my way out only to learn the true meaning of Granma's words, 'I'll Help You Get There, After That, I'll Sit Down.' Follow the journey to see where it took me.
