Eugene de Blaas was an Italian painter in the school known as Academic Classicism. It was in Venice that de Blaas excelled and established himself as a leading oil painter of Venetian genre and figures paintings. He depicted scenes which were characteristic of Venice, such as the local fishermen, beautiful women, and gondoliers surrounded by the marvellous architecture. He portrayed the charm and elegance of Venice by focussing on skin, hair, embroidered lace and other soft textures. His colourful and rather theatrical period images of Venetian society, e.g. On the Balcony (1877), were quite different compared to delicate pastels and etchings of the courtyards, balcony and canals of modern Venice. De Blaas paintings were exhibited throughout Europe, including at The Royal Academy between 1875 and 1891. De Blaas paintings continue to be in popular demand throughout the world.
