"Anything else you want?" I asked as I placed the mug in front of him. As usual, he grunted and shook his head. I looked up when someone walked in and joined him.

It was really unusual since our patrons were not exactly Devin's kind of people and I realized the newcomer was not our regular as soon as I saw his leather jacket. He was young though, very early 20s, with a fresh look in his face that made him blend rather well in our place.

"Hi there, anything I can get you?" I asked.
"What's he having? Black coffee?" he gestured at Devin's mug. "I'll have the same then."

It was disconcerting to see a smile and hear a complete speech, I found myself goggling at the younger man for a little while. "Anything else?"

"Tell her it's your goddamn birthday, she'll get you a free muffin," Devin growled.

The new guy threw a glance at him and then back at me, his eyes glinting with amusement. "Well, it is my birthday," he said, clearly lying through his teeth. "I could do with a muffin."

I grinned at him. "One black coffee, one muffin coming right up."
"Cute girl, what's her name?" I heard the comment as I walked away, even if he toned his voice down.
