Tarrant was a much celebrated English illustrator who specialised in depictions of fairy-like children and religious subjects; a pioneering woman in the male-dominated world of fine-art. She began her artistic career at the age of twenty, and published into the early 1950s. Appearing alongside the text, Tarrant’s illustrations further refine and elucidate Golding’s carefully collated anthology.
