John Fischer was in a bar in Carina, a small town in Mexico on the Gulf. He was with Linda Crane, a beautiful girl he’d met there on his vacation.
A man came into the bar and a chill seemed to come with him. People were avoiding him.
Linda said he was Barry Byrd. He was a voodoo practitioner everyone called “Hell Byrd.” He was generally hated.
John was there and knew a lot about voodoo, though he wasn't any expert. He had the background for the job he felt he had to do.
It turned out he didn’t have as easy a job as he’d predicted.

James “Jimmie the Shiv”Ames was having horrible luck in his life. Everything he touched seemed to come back to smack him in the chops.
He went to a voodoo woman to see if there was some kind of curse on him. There was, and it was a powerful one. He had made a dangerous enemy who had the curse put on him. There was some kind of problem where the curse couldn’t be lifted.
