Frederic Bastiat was a French political economist, statesman, classical liberal theorist, and the French Assembly. He coined the important economic concept of opportunity cost. His ideas have become the foundation for libertarian and the Austrian schools of thought.

Most of Bastiat’s political writings were done during the years just before and immediately after the Revolution of February 1848 when France was rapidly turning to complete socialism. As a Deputy to the Legislative Assembly, Bastiat explained each socialist fallacy as it appeared and how socialism must inevitably degenerate into communism that it must fail.

In this essay, Protectionism and Communism, Mr. Bastiat showed the injustice of the system of Protection and Communism. With logical force and neat application, he proved that the principles of protectionism and communism are in truth the same. The parallel is capable of easy demonstration and that Communism is itself wholly indefensible. The history after Mr. Bastiat proved that communism with protectionism was destructive of security and property, and, consequently, of society around the world from Russia, China, to North Korea. In a more start word, protectionism with communism is another term for robbery.

The same situation exists in China today as in the France of 1848 after China became the second power house by GDP. The China Model and the China Specialized Socialism and planed economy that were then adopted in France are now sweeping China with a peak confidence. As Mr. Bastiat warned in the essay, the nature and foundation of communism with protectionism will limit the height that China can go. It is for sure that Mr. Bastiat’s wisdom will be proven by China story again: Chinese People will throw away the plunders of the communist party unless Chinese Communist Party completely resets their foundation with open and democratic one.

Bastiat’s reasoning still remains as relevant today as it was then.   This essay is one of the most important essays about the deepest thoughts about protectionism and communism by Frederic Bastiat, one of the greatest thinkers of political economics on the planet. The Essay is already read more than a hundred years and it will still be read for another century due to its truths.
