Furor Loquendi translates from Latin as A Rage to Speak. Jim Burden is afflicted by a powerful compulsion to rant aloud whether other people are present or not. He doesn't know if these wild verbal outpourings are dictated by some demonic force that has taken over his voice or if they originate in his own unconscious mind. Jim struggles to overcome this compulsion with psychiatric help and the intervention of a priest, but all the while his uncontrollable words lead him deeper and deeper into trouble until ... but you will have to read the story to learn how it turns out.

Please be warned that much, but not all, of Jim's ranting is sexual in nature, employing vulgar terminology and loaded with testosterone energy. If you are offended by such language you may not want to listen to his ravings. On the other hand, those who are accustomed to vulgar speech will enjoy this tale of Jim's efforts to get his life back on track.

A commentary by Barry Spacks

"Furor" is exactly the right word to start off this extraordinary tale. What would happen in the world of polite and veiled exchange when one man among us turns utterly transparent, his inmost thoughts spoken aloud? A wild poetic energy produces the verbal tirades that propel the hero on his downward spiral. No one since Joyce, Woolf and Freud has written so breathtakingly about the consequences when the raw inner workings of the human mind bubble to the surface.

Long, and The Sophomore
