With the Great War in full swing, and Blair Leigh depressed at her lack of involvement in manoeuvres, she throws herself into her work. Just when she needs a challenge the most, Blair receives the easiest case any private detective ever encountered. The investigation is a formality – the mere presence of a supposedly dead man on the streets of London virtually proving the outlandish claim that condemned men are surviving the hangman’s drop. She sets her sights on the orchestrator of the scheme, the prison doctor, Luca Ferrara, who is quick to confess. Case closed. Or so it should be, yet turning him over to the authorities does not prove quite so simple.
