Roger Thorne, a respected doctor, dedicated faith healer and keen caver, suffers a what appears to be a nervous breakdown brought on by overwork. A strange, possibly paranormal experience while he is recovering in a Somerset clinic is followed by a series of events which seem to threaten his very existence while wreaking havoc with the lives of those around him. In the days and weeks that follow, Roger's life includes romance, saving lives, collecting and discussing art and participating in obscure quiz games. Continuing emotional turmoil and the struggle to remain sane in the face of emotional loss, criminal plots and the influence of dark forces take an increasingly heavy toll on him.
The worlds of orthodox and complementary medicine collide with those of painting, poetry, publishing, the occult and sexual attraction amongst the intelligentsia of 1970s London. All play their part in deciding Roger's fate whilst irrevocably changing the lives of some of those closest to him.
