Quinton Thompson manages to escape a toxic environment at home by enlisting in the Army. He works his way up from basic training through jump school and into the Special Forces. Along the way, he meets another trooper, James Forester, who falls in love with him. While Thompson struggles to process his feelings towards Forester, they are both training to perform High-Altitude, Low-Opening (HALO) jumps in the Special Forces.
HALO jumps start with jumping out of a plane at such high altitudes that the air is bone-chillingly cold and an oxygen tank is needed to breathe. Once you leave the aircraft, you freefall for a sickening amount of time before deploying your parachute as close to the ground as possible. It takes extreme focus and stamina to routinely perform a HALO jump in a combat simulation.
Thompson and Forester are assigned to a combat unit and deploy on a covert mission to rescue hostages in Benghazi during the 2011 Libyan Revolution. Their method of insertion into the warzone is a HALO jump. They have trained for this countless times. Now it’s the real thing.
But the moment they jump out of the aircraft, everything goes haywire. By the time Thompson reaches the ground, the mission is compromised and he realizes there must be someone in his combat unit who cannot be trusted. Thompson must fight for his life alongside the combat unit without knowing who among them is conspiring against him. And when the truth is finally revealed, Thompson is faced with a choice between surviving the mission and avenging a murder.
