Beth is pretty and bright, and has put up with much during her 25 years; the trailer [trash] park life, and a loser step-father Robert. He is a Loser, that is until he wins an abandoned farm in a poker game. Things improve for the family when Vincent, a young handsome horticulture student, asks Robert if he can use his land as part of his PHD. Despite Beth falling out with the student, Robert agrees. Within a few years the Vineyard is successful and the family well off. Despite all this, Beth is still not content as everyone else is settled. All she looks forward to is the legacy from her cancer-ridden step-father. However a problem is brewing as Beth intercepts a letter from Mary, an English woman who claims to be Roberts’s blood daughter. Mary flies out to the States, but Beth tricks Mary into believing that she has made an mistake, yet Robert has secretly (even from Mary) known about his daughter all her life. Like Mary, Robert had agreed not to contact Mary until her step-mother died.
Robert and Mary do eventfully meet as his life begins to drain away. After an explosive meeting between all three, where truths are told, Robert tells Beth that he had planned to leave everything to her anyway, as he trusts her most with both his life and money. She is shocked having always believed that she was disliked and under valued. Beth agrees to care for the land when Robert dies, but not to grow grapes, she wants to build low cost sustainable homes on the land. Eventually Robert comes round to the idea, and with the environmentally aware Vincent, the project begins to take shape.
Through all this Mary has stayed in Arizona, leaving her successful London art business with her nervy, friend and PA, Lily. They communicate via an almost daily series of transatlantic phone-calls, in which Mary’s growing love of Arizona and new found family is related with a stunning desert back-drop. Perkins, Mary’s long-term friend/solicitor/advisor, invites Mary and her new family to his New Hampshire wedding. He confirms the hinted at marriage to the horseracing mad, owner and trainer Evelyn, the newly divorced sister of the President.
Both Evelyn and her President brother (Glen) share a passion for the environment and affordable homes for the lower paid. At the reception Beth is astonished to be approached by the President asking her to work together.
