Heart of the Patriot is a World War 2 thriller set in Arnhem , Netherlands in summer 1944 which follows a young Dutch secret agent and the German SS officer he has been sent to assassinate. The situation is further complicated when the agent falls in love with the SS officer’s daughter.

Special Operations Executive (SOE) agent Johannes Sneijder is sent by his superior Harry Wilkinson to Holland to kill a high-ranking SS officer named Albrecht Koestler, at the request of an intelligence officer from the Dutch government-in-exile named Guido de Beer. Initially reluctant to accept his mission because of a moral aversion to killing, Sneijder accepts a deal; in return for him doing it, Wilkinson will personally investigate the whereabouts of Sneijder’s family, who went missing in the Netherlands just after Sneijder left.

Sneijder soon finds a complicated situation in the Netherlands, and he cannot be sure whom he can trust. In his loneliness he allows himself to become close to his target's daughter. With the future of Europe hanging in the balance and an Allied invasion drawing ever nearer, Sneijder must decide what is important.
