From the book: I was out cold until I hit the water. It was freezing and I immediately awoke. My senses had no time to figure out what was going on, I was in the sea, it was cold, I was heavy and sinking fast.
At the London supermarket bombing Jack goes into action: Ahead of me stood a terrorist, he had a grenade, a lethal looking knife and he had a hostage. She tried to bite his arm and he cuffed her.
‘A trade,’ I said, ‘me for the girl.’
I knew he wouldn’t trade, his sort never do. The girl tried to struggle free, she was feisty, he hit her once more and she looked at me.
I lifted my gun but the guy was taking cover behind her and was no easy target. He pushed her forward and they edged closer to my position. I had to do something, I hit the floor, took aim, praying to God that I didn’t hit her, and fired. The shot got him right between the eyes, he dropped his grenade, I had forgotten about the fucking grenade, and it exploded.
Reviews: A cracking little book, this is definitely one for the fans of Jack Hamma. Jack is in a hospital sat at the bed of an unknown person who is dying and he is reminiscing about his past. All those events from Jack's past that have been hinted at in the previous books, the supermarket bombing and the incident on the train, all finally get revealed here. I think it is one of the most important books in the series. You get to see how Jack has developed into the person he became in the previous books and his crazy mum gets a big scene in this time, she really brings the humour after some real serious moments. Great news at the end too, another book is on its way, looking forward to the next adventure.
It's great to have another Hamma. AE Thorogood just gets better with these larger than life action adventures. His dialogue is spare and pacey and his descriptions make the situations and characters come alive. Jack Hamma is a nice guy and we love to see the nice guys win. In this story we even get to know his mum and she's just as much a character. Highly recommended.
