A major literary rediscovery, this is a searing first novel written inside Trenton State Prison in 1968. Howard Street sold over a million copies.

One of the first literary depictions of black ghetto life, this hard boiled novel evokes a lost time in African-American culture. It is based on authentic first-hand Newark street experiences with unique insight into the psychology, motivations and lingo of the shadowy figures who inhabit the ghetto night: pimps, whores, junkies, dope dealers, winos, corrupt cops, and young hoodlums.

This powerful novel gives a depiction of the underground lives of the shady characters living in the ghetto. Although taking place in Newark, New Jersey, the people and scenarios could be much the same in any inner city. The author paints a picture of the shocking insight into the lives of prostitutes, procurers, drug dealers and drug addicts and those interacting with and living among them.

The writing is often compared with other "black experience" legends as Donald Goines and Iceberg Slim, and is informed by the disciplined and inspired prose of Jim Thompson, Charles Willeford, and Chester Himes.
