It’s the Age of Flight, and twelve year old American, John, and his family
are flying round the world in a plane piloted by his father.
They aim to be the first family to do this. But problems beset them,
when their plane, a Sikorsky Amphibian, is forced to crash land on an
ice floe off the shores of Greenland. Will
help come in time?
A Scottish fishing boat picks up their distress signals. The crew abandon fishing, and set a
terrifying course through Iceberg Alley, to rescue the survivors.

It's the Great Depression too.
On the boat is Colin, also twelve, a boy who has joined the crew as deckhand, to support his family after his
own father had died at sea. As the skipper steers the boat through the
perils of Iceberg Alley, Colin, initially fearful of the sea, becomes
fascinated by the wireless signals between boats and
radio station on land. He hears the failing distress signals, then sees
flares from an ice floe, showing the position of the
survivors.
After several attempts, the lifeboat eventually reaches the stranded
family; the crew carry them to the lifeboat, and row them back to the
big boat, under a dark sky lit by the Aurora Borealis.

This is a story in the 1930s about life on the high seas and in the air.
It is a story of adventure and hardship, inspired by the 1932
adventures of the American Hutchinson Family, known as the Flying
Family, whose dream of circumnavigating the world by plane ended when
they were forced to crash-land in the icebergs near Greenland. The
author’s own grandfather skippered the boat that rescued the Hutchinsons
and their crew, and grew up on the tales of the dramatic events.
