Britain 54 BC is a mysterious, unknown land on the very edge of the known world. The Roman General Gaius Julius Caesar; the scourge of the Gauls, is on the point of his second invasion of Britain. This foreign General and his army which threatens their southern coast although beaten on their first attempt, return with a much greater force this summer and the 'werrin' of Prydein fear the worst.
Prydein is ruled by five great Kings and its rich and vibrant culture is under threat from the conquerors of all. Prince Cadwy is the son of one of those Kings and now battle-proven in last year's defence of Britain, has settled into his new Tumony of Bidog, with the picturesque and busy market town of Draenwen at its heart. This celebrated Albion Tywysog seems to have everything a man could want in life, but all that is about to change. The call to the northern Kingdoms for assistance from King Caswallawn of the Southern Brythons hasn’t materialised this year. In his arrogance and hubris, that southern King has declared his own warriors are enough to deal with Caesar. With no further duties on the far distant south coast in regard to Roman aggression for Cadwy, this northern aristocrat’s future seems assured, as the crops are established and Bidog is flourishing in the early spring warmth. However, storm-clouds are gathering to the north and they look black and vengeful. If the young Prince has any foresight at all he would take a last, lingering look at beautiful Draenwen in the spring sunshine, as in just a few days it would be almost unrecognisable.
