A DEA agent owned by the Tocobar cocaine cartel provides protection for the Tocobar cash car, a 2016 Jaguar XS, but he can do nothing when the cash car has a fatal accident near Mobile, AL.

Dr. Sam Wright, a Mobile physician, needs to find a trunk lid for his latest toy, a 2016 Jaguar XS, without his wife Donna finding out. He finds one in a parts yard, but it's on the Tocobar cash car. While pulling it, he discovers 'them,' nine briefcases filled with over seven million dollars in cash. He knows that he shouldn't take the cash, that the Tocobar cartel will come after him because taking the cash will be viewed as a sign of disrespect by the Tocobar cartel, something it will not tolerate. For the Tocobar cartel, it's ALL about respect. But Sam considers taking the money as a personal challenge,

Sam soon realizes that his personal challenge includes Donna, so he tells her everything.

Sent by Eduardo Hernandez, the North American Tocobar cartel head, Alfonso Sanchez finds Sam and visits him. Sam's response is to move the cash to his personal storage unit, then deposit it in bank accounts in The Bahamas. In an effort to get Sam to commit an error, Alfonso tries to intimidate Sam by three different methods. When those attempts fail, Alfonso turns his attention to Sam's family.

The FBI gets involved and wonders why Sam drives so as to lose a tail, so he invents an affair story.

Having been disrespected by DEA Agent Adam North, Alfonso calls Adam's partner Carl Long (whom the cartel also owns) and suggests an investigation of Adam and Sam. What Carl discovers causes him to kill Adam, then go after Sam.

Alfonso attempts a final intimidation of Sam, but after Sam escapes that he realizes that the cartel will not stop unless he takes action. Sam meets with Sebastian Abarca, head of the Tocobar cartel, and convinces him that is mutually advantageous if he and his family remain unharmed. Sebastian says the cash was a gift, therefore there was no disrespect.

The book closes, ten years later, with Sam and Donna standing on the Côte d’Azur. Donna is happy because she has finally gotten what she has wanted her entire life: a house on a beach.
