Noadiah is a researcher, consumed by his work. He senses something is missing in his life. Bewildered, he ventures to a mountain to seek advice from an ascetic in how he nurtures his imagination while in his solitude. Instead, he’s surprised to meet Joshua who’s been looking for him. He offers Noadiah a solution to his dilemma— if he’s willing to accept the tasks.
Late one evening while sitting in his favorite café Noadiah is surprised to see Joshua there, with friends. They invited him to join the festivities. Reticent at first, he eventually relents. He soon learns that they’re celebrating the homecoming of Joshua’s friends. Although, after hearing of their travels to a place of space and time, he’s at a loss.
In an effort to help him understand as to why they went and what they discovered about themselves they take him to the Viewing Pool. He unexpectedly meets a young woman and senses something strangely familiar about her. She whispers words of love to him, while softly caressing his face, leaving him in a state of rapture.
His hope in finding her rests with Tobias, a man who will become his mentor. He soon learns that for him to be with her, he must experience life in the world of space and time— just as she has.
It isn’t until his life as Miriam in The Fisherman’s Daughter, that he gains perspective as to the meaning of Journeys. Miriam, may have her doubts as to her origin, but her father, Malachi (the spirit of the young woman from the Viewing Pool), is certain she is his daughter the night of her birth.
In Two lights, One flame, Noadiah is shown the life of Thomas. In spite of his mentor’s warning that his life will end tragically, he’s captivated by the woman he will meet. In the aftermath of Thomas’s passing, Noadiah is resolute. He attempts to find her without the guidance of his mentor.
Little does he realize, he’s misinterprets the blueprint in the lives he’s chosen on his own. Unbeknownst to him, however, the young woman from the Viewing Pool continues to come to him in many guises. Noadiah chooses the life of Galmann, in Deliverance from Retribution, to seek revenge for his death as Thomas. Before she can free him from his obsession, she’s sent away. Galmann goes looking for her.
In Requiem for Love, the young woman is Aunt Julie. During the reign of Louis the XIV, Sophie’s mother dies and she goes to live with her aunt and away from her odious father. When she turns eighteen they travel to Paris where they meet two young aristocrats at lunch, who invite them to a séance. A revelation causes Sophie to flee the room. To sooth any misunderstandings the young men invite them to the palace where life begins to unravel for Sophie. She eventually finds redemption in Marseille.
Noadiah is under the mistaken belief that as Sarah, she’ll give birth to the young woman from the Viewing Pool, but it is she who brings Sarah into the world during a stormy night on a Mississippi plantation in the early 1800’s. While Sarah, will give her mother, Regina, the Birth of Freedom in a Boston courtroom.
He’s reluctant to undertake another Journey, believing that he not only failed to find her, but that he’s caused irreparable harm to others. And yet, he feels compelled to live the life as Nicholas, in Photographs of the Mind. Inexplicably he encounters Donna on a windy day in Washington Square Park. Despite being born with a brain disorder, he has to contend with certain cops of the 8th precinct investigating her death.
Hearing of his grief in the lives he has lived, Tobias waits for him to arrive home from walking his dog. He reassures Noadiah, that the disgraced Journeys that he’s hidden in a shuttered room were actually instrumental in developing his character. To reaffirm, they spend an evening reliving them. Regardless of the torment in experiencing them again, he’s persuaded to view yet another Journey at the Viewing Pool, the life of Hunter Jackson.
In A Relentless Hunter, Noadiah and Tobias can’t seem to agree on what the other is observing in the reflections in the Viewing Pool. Ultimately, he accepts the Journey. After an abusive childhood, he joins the Army. In the aftermath of an incident in Vietnam, he’s sent to investigate espionage activity in Cold War Europe. It isn’t until he suspects his friend, Tom, that he meets Rita, of the West German Intelligence. On a chilly night in Frankfurt, they encounter Tom and his wife Helga. Following his discharge, unable to sleep, he fines himself at 57th Street and 5th Avenue in New York. Notes escape from a musician’s horn, it’s as if they have wings like countless butterflies dancing around the giant monoliths; he feels a presence surrounding him and imagines it’s Rita’s love.
In spite of all the lives he’s agreed to live, his ability to recall the reflections in the Pool will vanish in the ripples of the water with every departure.
