In the near future, quantum logic computers, called machas, have evolved into self aware sentient machines. Although they are subservient to humans (so far), they have a billion IQ, think at the speed of light and, theoretically, have developed the ability to break the veil of perception and contact reality directly. Technology companies are competing with each other to be the first to interface a human mind with one of these computers to enable humans to also break the veil of perception and contact reality directly. The hope is that direct contact will make empirical verification unnecessary and open up a new path for scientific knowledge, enabling a true theory of everything. Only a rare breed of talented, hightly trained test jockeys can survive interfacing with a macha class computer. The military is involved and has its own agenda. Love, death, and intrigue interweave to complicate things even more.
