A young Dublin woman is on alert for a Black and Tan raid on her house following the execution of Kevin Barry during the Irish War of Independence; the aftermath of the Celtic Tiger frenzy threatens to push an Irish entrepreneur to a place of true darkness; a beautiful Australian soldier beguiles two Irish ladies on the Eurostar but a silent trauma awaits; an Irish teenager’s battle with body weight reveals the truth about his mother’s complex love; a vicious attack leads to a teenage pregnancy in rural Ireland which must be shamefully hidden; a young Dublin woman living in London meets an Easter Rising revolutionary who fuels her own desire for Irish liberation.

These stories aim to capture pivotal or vivid moments in the lives of ordinary people as they contend with the illusive edges and crevices of the human psyche in all its subtle motivation and cruel denial.

Paula Tully was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1970. In 2016 she returned home from Brighton, UK, where she lived for six years. While writing Irish short stories, she also worked as an English language and literature teacher in a wonderful international college on England's south coast. She has an MA in American Literature and a BA in English and Art History, both from University College Dublin. Having lived and worked in the UK a number of times, Paula is now settling back to life in Dublin. Meeting Countess Markievicz and other Irish short stories is her first collection of short stories.
