Mimer’s Legacy
The story travels through time, from the big Ice drew back from the northern hemisphere up until modern days. We travel with the first hunter/ gatherer tribes wandering the land the ice have left, and see how they evolves into resident tribes. From the first tribes in this area, one man stands out, Arnook, leader of his tribe and soon to be the chosen guardian of his forest.
He meets the spirit of the forest, and she places a huge task on his shoulders, the task of guarding the forest through times to come. He follows us through the rest of the story, a guardian just barely seen, observing, just a moving shadow here, and a branch swaying there.
Before Arnook’s time, we meet Surt, a man with huge powers. He is shaped and taught, his destiny is set before him to conquer the world. He uses any means possible to him, including jumping from one body to another, this way prolonging his life. And those are his goals, to live forever and world dominance. (According to Norse mythology, he is a Jotun and one of those fighting in the final battle of Ragnarökr.) Surt uses any means possible, beginning a way of warfare only seen since much later by Attila, Genghis Khan and Kublai Khan.
We meet Thor Audunson, a boy of our time. He moves with his parents out of the big city, to a small farm. Here the boy meets the old storyteller, Karl Longwalk in a special place in the forest. Karl Longwalk was one of Odin’s many pseudonyms, and Longwalk never denies what he was. Together with Thor, he takes us on a journey beginning with the birth of Surt, continuing with the creation of Surt’s nemesis, Mimer, and continuing into one of the big wars of mankind. (Again, the old legends tell us how Mimer lost his head and Odin uses it as a device to see the future.) Longwalk tell us his version of the old legends, how Odin lost his eye, how he hang in Yggdrasil for nine days and nine nights before finding the runes. He tells the story of how he put his eye in a well to see the entire world, but he tells it the real way. And he tells of his friendship with Mimer, about the uprising against Surt, and the final battle resulting in the release of a curse. Ragnarökr!
Longwalk tells the story as Thor grows, and on the final stretch of the story, the boy has grown into a young man.
The story is a mix of old legends, mythology and historical facts and my fiction.
